Welcome to the training programme dedicated to mitochondrial research:
Quality Control of the Mitochondrial Gene Expression System in Health and Disease
MITGEST
MITGEST is a Doctoral Network (DN) funded within the framework of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) and coordinated by the International Institute of Molecular Mechanisms and Machines of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IMol). MITGEST brings together world-class academic experts in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) maintenance and expression with leading private sector specialists in nucleic acid chemistry and the development of mitochondrial therapies. Our integrated approach aims to lead the way in understanding and treatment of mitochondrial diseases through cutting-edge research and innovation. Read more about MITGEST research
Our team of 11 doctoral candidates (DCs) will:
- Investigate how mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is maintained and expressed.
- Develop new methods to analyse RNA and DNA metabolism in mitochondria.
- Follow complex scientific and non-scientific training.
Why MITGEST is important?
Mitochondrial dysfunction is a key feature of many rare genetic disorders known as mitochondrial diseases. These chronic, often fatal conditions occur when mitochondria fail to produce enough energy for the body. Through research, MITGEST seeks to deepen our understanding of mitochondrial gene expression and develop new methods to treat a wide range of mitochondrial disorders. By advancing this research, MITGEST supports and enhances innovative treatment strategies and experimental medicine studies aimed at reducing mitochondrial dysfunction in various human diseases.
