World Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week, observed from 16-22 September, is an annual campaign to raise awareness of mitochondrial diseases—rare genetic disorders that severely affect the body’s energy production. Mitochondria, known as the ‘powerhouses’ of cells, generate the energy required for vital bodily functions. When these fail, multiple organs, such as the heart, muscles, and brain, can be compromised. These diseases are progressive, often debilitating, and currently lack a cure, making early diagnosis, research, and support critical.

This awareness week plays a key role in educating the public, medical professionals, and policymakers about the complexities of mitochondrial diseases. By raising visibility, it encourages faster diagnoses, better treatments, and increased funding for research. Moreover, patient advocacy remains at the heart of the movement, ensuring that those affected are heard and supported in their daily challenges.

As part of this global effort, the MITGEST Project is proud to contribute to raising awareness with the launch of its new Mitochondrial Diseases page. This page serves as an educational hub where various stakeholders can gain an understanding of how mitochondria function and the damaging impact when they fail. It features clear explanations of mitochondrial diseases, providing accessible information for patients, families, researchers, and healthcare professionals.

A highlight of the page is a personal video interview with a mitochondrial disease patient representative, offering a rare and valuable first-hand perspective on living with the condition. Her story highlights not only the physical challenges but also the social struggles faced by those affected and the hope linked to advancing therapies through innovative research. By sharing her experience, MITGEST underscores the importance of including patients’ voices in the conversation, as well as the vital role patient associations play in advancing research and advocacy.

Through this newly launched page, MITGEST aims to build greater awareness and foster collaboration among the scientific community, patient groups, and healthcare providers. We encourage you to explore this resource and support the global campaigns #WorldMitoWeek2024 and #IlluminateTomorrow, which call for solidarity in the fight against mitochondrial diseases.
